The Dow Chemical Company is looking for Actives to Products R&D (A2P) Formulation Scientist (m/f)* to be based in Drusenheim, France (Strasbourg)


Actives to Products R&D, or A2P, brings our new crop protection active ingredients (actives) to Dow AgroSciences customers as products. A2P invents the chemistry that enables manufacturing ultimately to produce newly-discovered active ingredients on a commercial scale. A2P designs formulations that meet the attributes that our customers want and that meet or exceed regulatory requirements. A2P scales up these formulations and formulation processes to verify that products can be manufactured efficiently and consistently. Finally, A2P provides ongoing technical support and advice to Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Commercial, in order to troubleshoot problems and to enable continuous improvement.

The A2P group is looking for an experienced Formulation Scientist to be based in Drusenheim, (France).

The A2P Formulation Scientist utilizes his / her formulation expertise to develop Dow AgroSciences proprietary, innovative formulations with significant business impact to the company , provide technical support to our customers and key stakeholders and support the introduction of new formulations.

The incumbent will define and conduct research across multiple project areas using in-depth knowledge and proactive application of scientific principles, theory and experimental design.  In addition, the incumbent will perform research across multiple disciplines while developing and implementing technical solutions through hands-on experimentation.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Designs and develops novel formulations and delivery systems for new and existing DAS active ingredients through hands-on experimentation .

  • Utilizes formulation technology expertise to serve as a subject matter expert during technology transfer and implementation of new product launches in the region.

  • Develops value-creating solutions for our customers and stakeholders (manufacturing, regulatory, biology, commercial) in response to presented problems with broad scope and impact.

  • Leads the investigation of product quality concerns / issues and trouble shooting of product quality issues at plant level, conducts rework evaluations and provides recommendations to the plant.

  • Applies scientific knowledge, technical skills, and leadership to deliver high quality scientific results that are aligned with R&D project plans and create value for DAS.

  • Leads  multi-disciplinary teams of scientists to deliver key technical milestones of large projects for DAS R&D.

  • Demonstrates expertise in use of experimental / computational / theoretical methods and data handling.

  • Participates in the innovation process as it applies to specific projects and contributes to the innovation process through new opportunity identification. Collaborates with other functions in Actives to Products (A2P) and DAS R&D to explore, test and reduce to practice novel delivery concepts.

  • Consistently applies the Scientific Method in the planning and execution of experimental plans and problem solving.  Formulates hypotheses and develops experimental plans to test hypotheses.  Leverages Six Sigma tools and methodology to solve complex problems with projects of regional or global scope.

  • Keeps current with developments in area of formulation science and identify and implement applications which will benefit DAS. Has an in-depth understanding of the patent and journal literature across related areas of technology.  Understands and incorporate the competitive landscape in technology mapping. Works with legal department to manage IP and secure freedom to practice and patent new technologies.

  • Provides constructive input to project participants.

  • Mentors junior level scientists and technologists.

  • Delivers presentations or reports that distill complex ideas into clear results and proposals; communicates appropriately to influence internal and external audiences.

  • Communicates and appropriately documents work in the form of internal reports / presentations and external publications / presentations (when appropriate).  Drafts and submits patent disclosures as appropriate.

  • Utilizes in-depth knowledge of business ambitions, goals, and strategies to define project concepts.

  • Serves as SME or project leader on large multi-disciplinary project teams to collaborate, provide technical input and deliver results aligned with team deliverables (e.g. M&ISC, VCD, CPS Network and Core Teams).

  • Develops strategies for using external contact network; demonstrates influence to external organizations that impact and contribute to DAS success.

  • Maintains university / 3rd party contacts to keep technologies at state of the art level.

  • Serves as EH&S advocate for work group, ensuring understanding and adherence to policies and procedures.  Leads team in promotion of best safety practices, habits,

    and behaviors.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years technical research experience in academia or industry.

  • Experience and familiarity with design and development of formulated products.

  • Solid understanding of capabilities across disciplines. 

  • A solid track record of documentation. 

  • Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion.  Demonstrated significant involvement in designing studies, carrying out experiments, interpreting data, etc. to meet project milestones.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills. 

  • Ability to successfully partner with team members and stakeholders from multiple backgrounds.

  • Ability to work effectively across functions, cultures and time zones

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to delivers presentations that distill complex ideas and proactively communicates results and progress to technical teams, supervision, management, and business leadership.

  • English required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or related field


  • Minimum Masters Degree/Doctorate

  • Others:  Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Polymer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, and related fi elds.
